Mangaladevi Temple
Concealed within the dense enclaves of the Periyar Tiger Reserve lies a time-honored gem – a thousand-year-old temple that echoes with history and architectural brilliance, standing as a pilgrimage destination. At an elevation of 1340 meters, perched on the northern fringes of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, this temple pays homage to the deity Mangaladevi, revered as Kannaki. Despite the ravages of time, the temple's grandeur remains awe-inspiring, a testament to the immense effort that once went into transporting colossal granite blocks up the mountain to erect this formerly prosperous edifice. Architecture enthusiasts will find themselves captivated by the echoes of Pandyan architecture resonating in its construction.
Reaching the temple requires a 12-kilometer journey from Thekkady through challenging terrains, best undertaken by a sturdy jeep. The journey itself is an adventure, marked by an unpredictable path that adds an element of excitement. This path is not only a route to the temple but also a canvas that might unveil sightings of the critically endangered Nilgiri Tahr and other unique endemic flora and fauna. For visitors, the temple is a journey back in time, a rendezvous with history and nature's marvels. The temple stands as a tribute to both human ingenuity and nature's splendor, inviting all who seek to be part of its mystique.
Note : Mangaladevi Temple is closed throughout the year except during the Chitra Pournami festival. At other times tourists can visit Mangaladevi Temple after seeking permission from government authorities.
